Car racing tragedy CPO transferred as another accused arrested

RAWALPINDI, Dec 24: City Police Officer (CPO) Fakhar Sultan Raja was transferred and directed to report to the Central Police Office Lahore, sources told Dawn on Friday.
Regional Police Officer Hamid Mukhtar Gondal has been directed to assume additional charge of the CPO Rawalpindi till further orders.
The source said the city police officer was transferred in the wake of killing of five spectators at a car racing event in Bahria Town on December 5.
Meanwhile, Waleed Aman, marketing manager of Bahria Town, was arrested on Friday after an additional district and sessions judge cancelled his pre-arrest bail in the car racing case.
Judge Chaudhry Amir Mohammad Khan cancelled Waleed’s bail as police arrested him from court premises. He is nominated in the case along with three others.
The court has already denied bails to two other accused – Sheikh Atif, organiser of the event, and Majid Naeem, the driver of the car that lost control and hit spectators, killing five persons on December 5 in Bahria Town’s PhaseVIII.
Ali Riaz, the fourth accused who is chief executive officer of Bahria Town, is still at large as he has not obtained bail.
Maintaining that he was not one of the event’s organisers, Waleed told the court that he had asked the organisers to get permission from Rawalpindi’s district administration to hold the drag race.
The Supreme Court taking suo motu notice of five deaths has ordered probe into the event.
Earlier the police registered the case of unintentional murder and negligence but later added charges of intentional murder in the FIR.
