Hoax caller given in police custody

ISLAMABAD, Dec 22: A man who allegedly made threatening calls to carry out terrorism activities at the Ministry of Interior and the residence of the interior minister was here on Wednesday given in police custody for interrogation.
Tahir Rasheed, a native of Faisalabad, was produced before a civil judge who gave him in the custody of Secretariat police for two days.
He was brought to the capital on Tuesday night to face the case for making three threatening calls on December 13.
The accused worked as a watchman in Faisalabad, the police said, adding one of his daughters was mentally disturbed while his son was suffering from a deadly disease.
About a year ago, he approached the interior ministry seeking help in getting a job to meet the family’s financial needs and arrange medical treatment for his children.
After some time, a man approached him and introduced himself as an official of the interior ministry. The man told him that he had come to help him in response to his application submitted to the ministry.
He further told him that the ministry would allot him a plot in the federal capital on a cheap rate for which he had to pay only Rs150,000 in advance. The watchman took loan from his different acquaintances and paid the amount to the man.
However, he disappeared after getting the amount and Rasheed’s efforts to trace him remained unsuccessful. On the other hand, the acquaintances from whom he had taken the loan started asking him to return their money. One of them - Abdul Khaliq particularly pressured him and also frequently misbehaved with him.
This act of Khaliq annoyed Rasheed and he decided to implicate him in a criminal case. Later, Rasheed purchased a SIM against the computerised national identity card (CNIC) of Khaliq on December 13 and made the three threatening calls to the interior ministry and one to Faisalabad airport.
However, he was traced and arrested on December 15 by a joint team of Islamabad’s Crime Investigation Department and the local police from Faisalabad.
