Proposed changes in blasphemy law Protest day observed across province

HYDERABAD, Dec 24: Activists of religious parties took out processions and held demonstrations across the province on Friday to voice protest against attempts to amend the blasphemy law, in response to a call given by the Tehrik-i-Namoos-i-Risalat.
In Hyderabad, demonstrations were held outside all major mosques after Juma prayers and outside the press club.
Addressing a large gathering outside Madina Masjid Sirayghat Central president of the Tehrik Dr Sahibzada Abul Khair Mohammad Zubair said that if the government went ahead with its plans to repeal or amend the blasphemy law, religious par ties would urge people to march on Islamabad and besiege the rulers after a countrywide general strike on Dec 31 and a public meeting in Karachi on Jan 9.
He said that no law contrary to the injunctions of the Quran and Sunnah would be acceptable. He criticised the people who were branding the blasphemy law as a black law. The only punishment for blasphemy is death, he said.
He said that people were ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Maulana Fazlur Rehman, he said, had already made it clear to President Asif Ali Zardari that no one would accept any changes in the blasphemy law.
A large number of activists of Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) took out a procession in Latifabad and activists of Sunni Tehrik and Tehrik-i-Hurmat-i-Rasool (PBUH) held demonstrations outside the press club. They demanded removal of Punjab governor and execution of Ms Aasia.
Processions and demonstrations were also held in Sukkur, Nawabshah, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas and adjoining towns.
Religious scholars and leaders of various religious parties said in their speeches that they would not allow any amendment to the blasphemy law and would not accept the bill moved by Ms Sherry Rehman.
